The Tata Tiago is the latest offering from the Tata Motors India Limited. The car is expected to replace the aging model the Tata Indica. The hatchback developed under the code name ‘Kite’ was originally given the name the Zica, which rhymes with the deadly virus ZIKA which had spread terror all over the world.
The Tata Motors India limited had plans to launch the hatchback during the 2016 Indian Auto show. However, it has been delayed. As per the latest reports, the Tiago will be launched on March 28, 2016. The booking of the car has been started on 10th March.
Variants and prices
The Tata Tiago will have petrol and diesel variants. All the variants will have 5-speed manual transmission. AMT variants are expected later. The TML has not disclosed the prices of the Tiago. In the Indian market the car has to compete with the likes of the Marurti Suzuki Celerio, the Hyundai Grand i10, the Chevrolet Beat and the Renault Kwid. The prices are expected to be on par with those of the Celerio and slightly lower than those of the Grand i10. The expected price tag is Rupees 4 to 5.5 lakh.
The Tiago based on the XO platform will have a smiling honeycomb grille, curvy headlamps, large rounded rear bumper with fog lamps having chrome surrounds, a rear spoiler, wrap-around type tail lamps and a character chrome line between the headlights.
The cabin of the Tiago will have many comfort and safety features. They include a manual AC, power windows, electronic power steering, electrical ORVMs, rear defogger, rear wiper and washer and a Herman 8 speaker music system with eight speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, auxiliary-in and USB connectivity. The safety features include two air bags and ABS.
The Tiago will be powered by 1.2 litres, 84 bhp and 114 NM torque petrol engine giving expected mileages of 18 to 19 kmpl. The diesel variants will have 1.05 litres, 64 bhp and 140 NM torque engines with expected mileages of 25 kmpl.
Ride and handling
The suspension system of the Tiago comprises dual path McPherson struts at the front and twisted beams at the rear. The test drives conducted indicate that the controls are good giving comfortable rides.
